Girls Volleyball Breaks Out

Heather Hudson & Alexandra Nichols, Gr. 11
Due to weather conditions beyond our control, our Breakout Week volleyball trip to Cuba was missing one key part - Cuba! But with the exceptional efforts of both Mr. Collins and Mr. Moorlag a whole new week was put together for us. The week ended up being tons of fun and each and every girl was impressed by the activities we participated in, which was amazing considering the amount of time they had to prepare. So we would like to share what we did for the week.

Day 1 - Volleyball Clinic at CDS and Team Practice at York University

On Monday we all spent the day at the school getting back into volleyball so Mr. Moorlag and Mr. Collins lead/led us through many different drills that helped us get back into the groove because some of us had not played since last season. All the girls worked very well together and we had a great time during the clinic at CDS. After the day at CDS ended, we headed down to York University to train with the York University team, although each girl was a little anxious to play with these university level players! Despite this, as soon as we met them and started to play we realized we were able to keep up. We had a chance to do some drills with their team at the start of their practice, then afterwards we watched them play at their level in a team scrimmage which was really cool. This was a great experience and all of us were able to take something away and see the possibilities if we continued with volleyball after CDS.

Day 2 - Beach Blast!
On Tuesday we travelled to Beach Blast, an indoor beach volleyball facility, to play some beach. We were lucky enough to be able to train with Melissa and Felipe Humana-Peredes who are members of the National Beach Volleyball Team and are striving to be able to play in the Olympics in the future. Both Melissa and Felipe were so nice to all of us and really helped us develop and learn how to play beach. We ended the clinic with a competitive round robin tournament which everyone enjoyed very much. At the end, we were given sports bras that Melissa had worn at some of her different national tournaments which was very cool.

Day 3 - Working on the Mental Side of Sport
On Wednesday, after two very tiring days of playing volleyball, all of the girls were a little sore, so we had a session with Vince Luciani from Legacy Coaching. Vince really pushed all of the girls to think outside of the box and develop our understanding of the mental side of sport. We covered positive thinking, finding your purpose, and facing our fears and setbacks. During the session each of the girls were encouraged to engage and participate. Overall it was an eye-opening experience!

Day 4 - Escape Room and Ashbridges Bay
On Thursday we were just expecting to spend the day at Ashbridges Bay on the beach while playing some volleyball, but Mr. Moorlag and Mr. Collins surprised us with an Escape Room activity. The grade 10’s and 11’s both competed against each other with the help from one teacher; with smart thinking all the girls did a great job and were able to escape the room. After this exciting surprise, we headed down to Ashbridges Bay and played some beach volleyball! It was a beautiful day and some of the girls even decided to go swimming in the water. What a great way to end off an amazing week.

The girls had such a good time this week and we owe it to Mr. Collins and Mr. Moorlag to be able to put this together on such short notice. Our volleyball skills improved, we became closer as a team, and had a great time while doing it!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
