Grade 5s Discover the Magic of Matter

Kelly Johnson, Grade 5 Faculty
The Grade 5s are studying the topic of matter in their science classes. It’s been a busy, messy and exciting week in the classroom as the Grade 5s covered chemical reactions and properties of matter and are presented their “Matter Magic” science experiments.

Prior to the demonstrations, the Grade 5 students spent time reading and watching videos about changes in the state of matter (solid, liquid and gas) and investigating why some changes are physical and some are chemical. They even played some competitive games outside in Outdoor Ed to help them understand these three changes in state.
This week, each student was instructed to pick an experiment that demonstrated an aspect of matter. The next step was to teach the class about physical and/or chemical changes in matter. Every student has done a wonderful job investigating “magic of matter” and teaching their classmates something new!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
