Good Read for Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents

Leslie Colucci
Last spring, two members of the SSC had the opportunity to attend workshops presented by Lynn Lyons, an internationally renowned  social worker and psychotherapist with a private practice in New Hampshire. Her presentation was entitled “Managing Anxiety at School & Home: Powerful Approaches for Breaking the Worry Cycle”.
Lyons’ style was engaging, informative and encouraging, assuring the participants that worry and fear are normal and healthy responses - until they begin to rule the lives of those who try to avoid them. As the workshop was a most worthwhile experience, it was recommended that all the members of the department read the book that she and her co-author have published on the same theme, Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents: 7 Ways to Stop the Worry Cycle and Raise Courageous & Independent Children.

The book provides a plan to help anxious children confront, rather than avoid, their fears in order to conquer their anxiety. Each informative chapter explores relevant concepts, often including examples from case studies, and ending with practical advice for parents to put into action.

Lyons and her co-author, Reid Wilson, develop their plan through the investigation of seven pieces of a puzzle for ‘beating anxiety’; expect to worry, talk to your worry, be unsure and uncomfortable on purpose, breathe, know what you want, bridge back to your success, and take action on your plan. Reading this book will help families put the fear and worry that may be holding them hostage into a more constructive perspective.

CDS has copies of Lynn Lyons' books available to borrow in the SSC.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
