Future Looks Bright for CDS DECA

On February 8, 29 CDS students participated in the 40th annual DECA Ontario Provincial Competition in downtown Toronto. Students compete in a variety of business categories, including Entrepreneurship, Marking, Finance, and Business Management, after undergoing rigorous training and preparation throughout the school year.
Some of the students competed in written events which involved the submission of business reports, anywhere from 10 to even 30 pages in length. Not only this, they must share their proposal in an intense 15-minute presentation with industry expert judges—ranging from million-dollar CEOs or well-reputable accountants. Other students competed in case study events in which they were required to think on their feet. Students are given scenarios as they walk in the door, often involving business problems, and are only given 15 minutes to analyze the case and prepare a methodical solution. They then immediately present their ideas in 15 minutes, in front of knowledgeable judges.

Approximately 7,300 high school students from across Ontario compete at the provincial conference, with an average of 6.2% qualifying for the renowned international competition, ICDC. CDS showcased its potential with nine of our 29 members (31%) accepting awards on stage and six of these members (21%) qualifying for internationals this year, which will take place in sunny Orlando, Florida!

“This has been a successful year indeed; not only for those that have qualified, but many Grade 9 and 10s also showed outstanding potential, competed at a high level, and came close to qualifying,” said Faculty Advisor, Laura Aldoroty. “I’m very impressed with the younger contingent; the future looks bright for CDS DECA.”

“After an intense first term of training our DECA members, I was ecstatic to see the hard work of our students pay off. Regardless of whether you win or lose, the learning experience DECA provides is unmatched and will serve them well, no matter the career they choose,” stated DECA Chapter President Kabir Walia ’19.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
