Junior School Aspires to Run 5373km for Terry
This September, the students of the Junior School have been working hard during PE classes, and running every single day. As distance runners, they have been learning about the importance of setting a “pace” and setting small goals for themselves, each class. They have also been learning about a well known Canadian hero named Terry Fox.
These daily runs in our CDS backyard running trails have helped our students to understand the huge physical and mental task Terry Fox accomplished every single day on his Marathon of Hope. Phys. Ed teachers have challenged the students of the Junior School to see if they can collectively run as far as Terry did. On average, Terry ran 42 km per day. He started in St. John’s, Newfoundland and ran through six provinces before having to stop. He ran for a total of 5373 km before his health forced him to stop outside Thunder Bay, Ontario. Our goal as a Junior School is to run 5373km together.
When we combine all the laps run by all JS Phys. Ed students from JK to Grade 6, we have a total of 1419 km. We are almost out of Nova Scotia - heading west toward New Brunswick. We still have a long way to go!
This challenge has helped us to understand the incredible thing Terry did, to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. Our students are becoming more resilient. They ran in different types of weather conditions which forced them to deal with the physical and mental discomforts associated with cross-country running. It’s making them stronger every day.

Land Acknowledgment
