Spoken Word Artist visits Grade 12 Writer's Craft

Yesterday, Ms. Hudson's Grade 12 Writer's Craft class was treated to a virtual presentation from spoken word artist, Britta Badour (Britta B). Britta, who was recently named Toronto Arts Foundation's Emerging Artist of 2021, is also an educator and social justice activist, was well-positioned to give the class advice about how to enter this field and possibly make a career from writing. Along with some fun writing games, Britta performed some of her own work for the class and answered their questions about her path to success.
Nicoletta Rotundo '22 had this to say about the experience: "We come across very few individuals in life who have the instantaneous ability to spark deep spiritual connections with others upon first introduction. For the Grade 12 Writer's Craft class, Britta B. was that person. Britta's infectious energy radiated throughout the class as she spoke so candidly about her experience as a writer. The class was fortunate enough to learn strategies on how to improve our creative writing skills from such a talented and established artist. As we are currently working on creating a poetry portfolio comprising six original poems, Britta inspired us to trust our creative instincts and to never shy away from experimenting with different ideas. She explained that the best poetry is not only created when we are in a state of intense passion, but when we learn to feed off of the positive energies produced by those who are willing to support us on our journey of artistic development."

Thanks to Ms. Rutledge for organising and hosting this inspiring morning!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
