Canadian Senior & Intermediate Mathematics Contests

Krista Edwards
On November 17th, we had 38 motivated students rise to the challenge of competing in either the Canadian Senior Mathematics Competition (CSMC) or the Canadian Intermediate Math Competition (CIMC). These are two-hour contests requiring full solutions that provide students with opportunities to demonstrate an excellent knowledge of various mathematical topics.
The CIMC is offered to students in Grade 10 or below. This year, there were 8561 worldwide participants. The worldwide average score was of 30 out of 60. Certificates of Distinction are awarded to students who achieved above a qualifying score of 37 out of 60, and who were also in the top 25% of those who wrote the contest at CDS.

Once we are back to in-person learning, the following students will be awarded Certificates of Distinction:
  • Alex Wang (Grade 10), Carolyn Du (Grade 10), and Jerry Lin (Grade 8), who all achieved a score of 38
  • Jesse Novik (Grade 10), who achieved a score of 41
  • Kevin Yang (Grade 10) and Frank Fu (Grade 9), who earned a score of 42
  • Kate Sha (Grade 10), who achieved a score of 43
Lastly, a Certificate of Distinction and the school medal for achieving the top score of 47 will be awarded to Stone Li (Grade 10).

The CSMC is offered to students in Grade 12 or below. This year, there were 9990 worldwide participants. The worldwide average score was 27 out of 60. Certificates of Distinction are awarded to students who achieved above a qualifying score of 32.

Once we are back to in-person learning, Laura Sun (Grade 11) will receive a Certificate of Distinction for achieving a score of 33. And lastly, a Certificate of Distinction and the school medal for achieving the top score of 42 will be awarded to Jordan Chen (Grade 11).

Congratulations to all who participated in these two challenging contests. Please reach out to your math teacher for your score if your results were not mentioned.

Going forward, the Mathematics and Computer Science department would like to remind students that there are more enrichment opportunities coming up in the near future. The Canadian Computing Competition will be held on February 16th, and the Pascal, Cayley, and Fermat math contests will be written on February 23rd. Sign-up Google Forms are available through your Math or Computer Science teachers’ Google Sites.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
