Spanish Classes Celebrate Black History Month

Beatrice Stefanescu
February is Black History Month and this is a wonderful opportunity to teach about the incredibly rich Afrolatino culture in Spanish classes at every level. Throughout the month there will be a focus on the history and contributions of Latinos of African descent.
Specifically, students will be learning about the centuries of history of Afrolatinos in Latina America. Furthermore, students will explore the biographies and contributions of different Afrolatinos that have impacted Hispanic culture in the past, and those who are doing so currently.

Finally, a popular tradition in the Spanish program is “Miércoles musical” (Musical Wednesday). On Wednesdays, classes listen to and analyze different Hispanic songs, their meanings both literally and figuratively, and their connection to historical and current events. During Black History Month we will be featuring the music of Afrolatino artists and considering their perspectives.

Hispanic culture is a blend of so many ethnically diverse populations, and it is such a pleasure to be able to teach and celebrate their impacts on the Spanish language and Hispanic culture as a whole.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
