Canadian Team Math Competition

By Eunice Yu
On April 15th, five Grade 10 and 11 students went to Pickering College for the University of Waterloo’s Math Team competition. The competitors were Luca Tchelidze, Jason Liang, Tiffany Chan, Andrii Bessarab, and Vincent Wang.

First, Mike Eden, a professor from the University of Waterloo, gave a welcome speech and presented a few cool math problems to prepare our brains for the day.

After a short break, the competition started with team questions. In this section, each team of 6 students was to solve questions strategically and work together. Although we were a group of 5, we did our best and worked together to complete most of the 25 questions given.

The second part of the competition was the individual testing portion, where each team member had 10 questions. This was much like a test, and the questions were very challenging. However, we persevered and pushed to completion.

The last part of the competition was a relay. Our team was split into a group of 3 and 2. Just like a relay race, the first person had to solve a question, and the answer was used to solve the second question. Then, the answer to the second question was used to solve the third question. This was the most challenging part of the competition because we only had five people on our team. The relay was supposed to be in groups of threes, but with a group of 2, a person had to play their first and the third spot in the relay. Despite the many nerve-racking moments and lack of time, we completed the relay.

We were served dinner after all three parts of the competition, and the winner was announced. Although not CDS, we did our best despite being the only team with five members and missing the Grade 12s. We are thankful for the opportunity and look forward to trying again next year with more preparation. We are hopeful that next year, we can bring home a win!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
