Building Series #3: Happy Earth Week!

I am pleased to report that our construction team has made remarkable headway despite having endured one of the most challenging winters on record. I am optimistically writing in the past tense as snow is forecast for tonight!

Inevitably, in scheduling a project of this scale, there are unexpected factors that can present themselves and significant hurdles that must still be cleared. Rest assured, the team will continue to make every effort to maintain their present level of progress. We will continue to keep you informed with specific building updates approximately every two weeks - from now through to when the building opens.
This week’s update coincides with Earth Week. As a school that endeavours to instill environmental consciousness in our students, we are determined to lead by example!

You may have already noticed the large number of windows in the new structure, an intentional design element to create more of a connection with our country setting and allow for streaming as much natural light as possible. On a recent tour of the interior, one parent remarked how bright it was given there were no lights on.

Recent studies into the positive effects of “daylighting” in schools reveal that natural light improves student satisfaction, mood, test scores and overall productivity. I am happy to report that there will be an abundance of light-filled spaces sprinkled throughout the new Dining Hall and Senior School classrooms. In my next Building Update, I will shine the spotlight on one of those spaces – the Learning Stairs.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
