Student-Athletes Recognized at Winter Term Assemblies

Monday’s Middle and Senior Athletic Assembly celebrated the achievements of our winter term athletes, while Junior School students gathered on Tuesday (see story below). Both assemblies provided an opportunity for parents, faculty, and peers to celebrate the dedication, perseverance, and sportsmanship displayed by our Cyclones throughout the season.
As in the past few years, the Middle/Senior School Assembly featured the CDS Sports Desk, with GY students Mila Marcelli, Libby Montgomery, and Cooper Smith in the role of sportscasters. One by one they called up team captains for interviews before coaches presented the awards for Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, and Most Sportsmanlike Player for each team.

In her remarks, Athletic Director Geneva Winterink shared that this term featured an "Olympic-inspired" medal count that was among the highest the school has ever seen. CDS teams competed with passion and integrity, resulting in a medal count of three gold medals, four silver medals, and one bronze, alongside the Senior Boys' Hockey Team's outstanding run to the semifinals.

She then introduced our special guest speaker, CDS alumna and Canadian National Mogul Skier Berkley Brown ’18, who delivered an inspiring keynote address.

Berkley has spent five years on the World Cup tour, competing in more than 35 World Cups and two World Championships in over 12 countries. She has finished 6th in the world and today is ranked third in Canada. She shared that it was not her race results that shaped her most, but rather the setbacks—including tearing her ACL three times!

For Berkley, resilience wasn't about never breaking; it was about rebuilding and making a comeback in the sport she loves. Now, as she transitions out of competitive sport, she realizes that everything she thought was preparing her for podiums was actually preparing her for the journey called life.

Congratulations to all of our winter term athletes! Over the March Break, start thinking about which teams you’re going to try out for this spring—Term 3 is just around the corner with the following choices:

Senior Boys Baseball, U14 Boys Slow Pitch, Senior Girls Softball, U14 Girls Softball, Co-ed Senior Ultimate Frisbee, Senior Girls Rugby, Senior & Middle School Track, Golf, Varsity Girls & Boys Tennis, U14 Girls & Boys Tennis, Co-ed Varsity Badminton and Co-ed U14 Badminton.

Go Cyclones!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
