Speech & Debate Team Experiences Weekend Sprint with Multiple Triumphs
From Friday afternoon - Saturday evening, four members of our Speech & Debate Team participated in the Senior Provincial Debate Championships hosted by the Ontario Student Debating Union at Appleby College. Austin Chen and Kenneth Wang competed as a team, as did Adhya Chandradat and Aneesa Khan. The competition was fierce and the experience invaluable for all of them. And both Adhya and Aneesa will be going to the World Individual Debating & Public Speaking Championships in Bristol, England, in April!
On Saturday, five other members travelled to Pickering College to compete in the Winter Fulford Debate. Aara Ko, Isla Gunning and Vivienne Chen competed for the Juniors and Sophie Yuan and Colin Nnoaham competed as Seniors. Isla placed 4th overall individually and the Junior team came 2nd overall.
Then on Monday, six French students in Grades 9-11 (some who are members of the Speech & Debate Team) set out to compete in Concours d'art oratoire, a French public speaking competition hosted by Toronto District Christian High School in Woodbridge. Competing in a second language of course adds another layer of complexity and challenge for our debaters – and we were proud of them for once again taking themselves out of their comfort zone.
Mandana Maghsoudi, Yuling Qian and Maira Butt-Correa competed in the traditional speech category (giving a memorized 3-5 minute speech on a topic of their choice). Sophie Yuan, Lina Sweeney and Adhya Chandradat competed in the impromptu category (prompt or photo given with 15 minutes preparation time and then they had to speak for 3-5 minutes).
Yuling placed first in her category and will compete at the Provincial Concours at Glendon College, York University on Saturday, May 2. Congratulations to all!
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
Founded in 1972, The Country Day School is a co-educational private school offering programs in JK-12 and located on 100 acres north of Toronto in King.
