A guiding principle of our school is to develop global understanding. We are excited to share that CDS will be travelling to France, Belgium, and the Netherlands during the 2024 March Break. We are currently scheduled to depart on March 7th and return on March 17th. The trip is organized and facilitated by Georgia Hardy Tours in consultation with military historian (and retired CAIS teacher) Dr. Eric McGeer and intended for students in Grades 10-12 with a keen interest in history.
2024 will mark the 80th anniversary of the Second World War D-Day Allied landing on the beaches of Normandy, France, and the beginning of the arduous northern campaign to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation. The Canadian military played a significant role in both the landing operation and also the ensuing 14-month liberation campaign. This invasion saw many of Canada’s greatest feats of arms; the sacrifices of our military are still commemorated in Europe by dozens of memorials, cenotaphs, cemeteries and museums.
We will visit the great cities of Paris and Amsterdam, the battlefields of Normandy and Flanders, and charming medieval Bruges. In each location, the experiences and activities are programmed with an emphasis on the Canadian identity-forming experience in Europe during the 20th century. Part of this journey will involve our own identity forming; CDS students and teachers will be travelling as part of a larger CAIS school group for the duration of the trip.
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
Founded in 1972, The Country Day School is a co-educational private school offering programs in JK-12 and located on 100 acres north of Toronto in King.
