The ABC’s of Critical Thinking in the Classroom

During their June PD session, Middle and Senior School Faculty were treated to a keynote by philosopher, educator and author, Dr. Christopher DiCarlo, on critical thinking and how to teach it in the classroom.

DiCarlo’s most recent book, Six Steps to Better Thinking: How to Disagree and Get Along, explores our current world of alternative facts and fake news, and suggests that not seeing things eye-to-eye ought not lead to rude or hateful behavior.

A Professor in the Faculties of Human Biology and Philosophy at the University of Toronto, Dr. DiCarlo is also a lifetime member of Humanist Canada and an Expert Advisor for the Centre for Inquiry Canada.

According to his website biography, Dr. DiCarlo is also the Principal of Critical Thinking Solutions, an educational consulting business for individuals, corporations, and not-for-profits in both the private and public sectors. He is also the developer of the first Pilot Project in Canada to introduce Universal Critical Thinking skills into the Ontario Public High School curriculum which has begun in the Upper Grand District School Board. These skills have since been developed into The Critical Thinking Project – an International Education Program – and have been adopted in schools in Guatemala, Rwanda, Uganda, and Ghana with further interest in China, Colombia, Cuba, Afghanistan, and Iran.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
