Last Monday, the CDS Math Team competed in the Canadian Team Mathematics Challenge hosted by Pickering College. The event featured 11 teams from eight independent schools. Teams wrote the same University of Waterloo paper written by participants around the world.
Before the start of the contest, students enjoyed a presentation by Richard Dlin, an instructor at the University of Waterloo. Mr. Dlin talked to the competitors about the value of analyzing problems using different approaches and striving to identify the correct answer through the most optimal pathway.
The competition consisted of three parts: team, individual and relay. In the team portion, all six members worked together to solve 25 questions without the use of a calculator. In the individual portion, each member worked independently on 10 questions. In the final event, students worked together to solve questions in a relay-style event in which answers were passed from one member to the next.
After four hours of intense competition, the CDS team members had an opportunity to have dinner and mingle with competitors from the other teams. Overall, the team placed sixth out of eleven – a very commendable performance.

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
Founded in 1972, The Country Day School is a co-educational private school offering programs in JK-12 and located on 100 acres north of Toronto in King.
