Grade 6’s Mean Business

By Liane Cooke
By Liane Cooke

Last Friday, the Grade 6 students participated in an exciting math activity that helped to introduce them to the world of finance and trading stocks.
Students were given play money to “ invest” in different companies in a fictional, Northern Ontario town. There were three rounds of play and in each round the “company owners” described their businesses and how their stock values were affected by current events. Students bought and sold company stocks according to the information given about the happenings in the town and their predictions about how the companies would be affected in the future. After three rounds of play, the students tallied up their total stock and cash values and a winner was declared!

This game was lively and action-packed with students rushing to buy and sell before the end of each round.

We’d like to thank the “company owners” Mrs. Street, Mr. Rafferty, Mr. Wood, Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Lauria-Parnis, Mrs. Cawfield, Ms. Kuchmak and Ms. Kettrick for bringing their enthusiasm and formidable acting skills to the game, and for making it a rewarding student experience!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
