Author Michael Stewart inspires JS Creative writing

By Mrs. Johnson
By Mrs. Johnson

Last Friday, the Grade 5 classes invited award-winning author Michael F. Stewart to help kick start their creative writing unit. He has authored over two dozen books for kids and young adults. From graphic novels to humorous middle grade novels, Michael enjoys stretching the limits on his storytelling and working with other authors young and old to tell their stories.

The Grade 5s participated in creating "ideation" lists to ignite their imaginations, followed by some time to create a loose storyline based on their initial lists. Mr. Stewart gave some practical advice for young story writers, encouraging everyone to be aware of their surroundings and take mental notes, because you never know where your next idea might come from.

We are all looking forward to reading some unique stories written by the Grade 5s in October!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
