From Shy Beginner to Team Canada: Evie’s Karate Journey

CDS Grade 5 student, Evie Berne, first stepped onto the karate mats in 2021 as a shy and timid young girl, encouraged by her parents and guided by her mentor, Sensei John Esposito. What began as a way to build confidence and structure quickly grew into a passion fueled by discipline, hard work, and perseverance.

Evie thrives on the challenge of upgrading her kicks and memorizing new movements. Now in her fifth year and competing as a brown belt, she has embraced the excitement of tournaments and competition, finding motivation in both her teammates’ energy and her own steady progress.
That determination paid off last May when Evie captured a bronze medal at the Ontario Provincial Championships in Gatineau, QC, earning a coveted spot on Team Canada.

Later this month, she will proudly represent Canada at the World Karate Championships (WKC) in Niagara Falls, NY. For Evie, this achievement is not only a personal milestone but also proof that with resilience and belief in yourself, anything is possible.

Beyond karate, Evie loves running cross-country and playing soccer with her classmates at CDS. But on the national stage, she is honored to wear the maple leaf and hopes her journey inspires others to chase their goals with the same passion and perseverance.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
