The Country Day School’s new Ski and Snowboard team is carving a place for themselves on the slopes, and Grade 9 student and snowboarder, Alex Sward of King, is helping them achieve this.
Alex began snowboarding at just four years old and considers the sport one of his favourites. Last week Alex placed first overall and first in the U16 division at competition at Devil’s Glen in Glen Huron, Ontario.
His CDS coach, Fraser Fell, says “Alex certainly turned a few heads at last week’s race. The slopes were a bit icy, but that didn’t seem to faze him. Considering this was our first competition of the season, it is clear Alex has strong potential to be a major competitor in his division.”
Alex and his teammates compete in time trial racing in addition to slope style racing. Each individual completes a run twice, and the best time is counted. Slope style takes into consideration three tricks per run.
In the off-season Alex plays golf at the competitive level as a member of the Canada Junior Golf Association – his other favourite sport. In his spare time he likes to wakeboard.
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
Founded in 1972, The Country Day School is a co-educational private school offering programs in JK-12 and located on 100 acres north of Toronto in King.
