Olivia Railton Enjoys Banner Year of Debating

Olivia Railton is no newcomer to public speaking. The Grade 9 student at CDS has been participating in the School’s Public Speaking and Debating program for three years now. As a junior member of the Senior School team, she didn’t qualify to participate in the international competition the School hosted in October, but has been a standout ever since.
In November, Olivia won the Junior Fulford Trophy at Ridley College alongside her Grade 10 teammate Natalie Ganzhorn. In January CDS sent four debaters, two Grade 12 students and two Grade 9 students, including Olivia, to participate in the Queen’s University High School Debating Tournament for the first time. With more wins than losses, the four of them learned a great deal about how to debate in this kind of forum, where content wins over style.

Fresh from her experience at Queen’s, Olivia finished 2nd overall at the Fulford Debate in February and went on to place 3rd at the Hart House Debate Tournament at the University of Toronto in the Junior Division in March. She then qualified at a competition at BSS to participate in the Canadian National Junior High Public Speaking Championships in Vancouver in May.

Last month, Olivia travelled to Vancouver with her coach Mrs. Wyndham-West to attend Junior Nationals and did extremely well - placing 1st in Dramatic and 3rd in debate. She was a finalist in all 4 events and finished 5th overall in Canada. Congratulations Olivia!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
