Lest We Forget

At the morning Remembrance Day assembly, Middle and Senior School students gathered to honour the bravery, sacrifice and humility of those who served Canada, the men and women who stood for our freedom and peace, both at home and overseas.

We witnessed moving performances by our Drama and Music departments, and heard powerful stories shared by our Social Science students about local heroes from King Township, some who fought in the battles and others who stayed behind and helped the cause from home.
John Clarke survived poverty and war, then built a life here in King. Alex Campbell fell 15,000 feet into enemy territory and made it home. Jack Sydie was a blacksmith from Tottenham who died in France just weeks before the war ended. Mary Agar cared for the wounded [in both Canada and England]. Lady Eaton opened her home [Eaton Hall on Seneca College’s campus as a military hospital]. Mary Anne Curtis fed soldiers with food from her 100-acre farm.”

"These brave individuals walked the same streets of King that we do and their stories belong to our community. While we cannot repay what they gave, we can remember them and continue to tell their stories, and speak their names out loud."

Lest we forget.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
