Last Week’s Terry Fox Run Offered Important Words to Live By

Last Friday, The Country Day School held its 34th run for Terry Fox in which the entire school participated. Students and faculty/staff ran and walked throughout the school’s extensive trail system with the Junior School run/walking a shorter loop for 42 minutes and the Middle/Senior School students run/walking a longer loop that included a colour run, foam, and a slip and slide, followed by some fun House competition events on Hawksworth Field. The CDS mascot, Storm the Cyclone, was cheering our students on every step of the way.
In anticipation of the run, the Junior School talked about Terry’s Marathon of Hope in their weekly assembly. On Friday students placed dedication name stickers honouring who they were running for on a banner located in the JS gym before heading outside. Our Grade 6 students participated in the run off-site at Camp Medeba as they did last year.

During the Middle/Senior School Terry Fox Assembly, CDS Parent Basma Torrealba, mother of Brianna ’26Daniel ’19 and Jose ’17, shared her personal and incredibly brave battle with gastric cancer. Two years later, every test and doctor’s visit still makes their hearts drop as each result is a reminder that their lives could turn upside down again in an instant.

Terry Fox once said, “I want to set an example that will never be forgotten.” He ran for people he never met.
“Today, I speak for the families you may never see,” said Basma. “Families who look fine on the outside, but who are carrying battles in silence.”

“So, when you walk, when you run, when you donate, know that you are carrying us forward. You are carrying someone like Brianna forward. You are carrying me forward. And you are carrying the hope that one day, cancer will take no more from any of us.”

Thank you Basma for sharing your powerful story of survival with all of us. Once again, CDS proudly ran for Terry and ALL our loved ones who have been affected by cancer.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
