Track & Field OFSAA Championships in Ottawa

Denise Steadman
Aidan Quast ‘26, Carter Saley ‘26 and Hannah Clarke ‘23 traveled to Ottawa last Wednesday to compete at the 2023 Track & Field Championships. This would be Aidan and Carter’s first experience at OFSAA and Hannah’s last competition as a high school athlete.  Needless to say, their emotions spanned from excitement and eagerness to restlessness and nervousness.
As true student-athletes, Aidan, Carter and Hannah would write their exam Thursday morning in one of the boardrooms in the hotel. Once their exam was finished, they could turn their focus onto competing at the OFSAA Championships, one of the largest high-school track and field meets in Canada. Only the top 24 athletes in the Province in each discipline participate in this fantastic sporting event. We traveled to The Terry Fox Athletic Facility to complete a warm-up over some hurdles and of course to buy the much coveted OFSAA gear. A big shout out to Mrs. Clarke for standing in line for more than two hours to pick-up everyone’s OFSAA clothes.

All three athletes competed in the sprint hurdles Friday morning.  Aidan and Carter competed in the novice boys 100mH. Aidan ran a personal best (PB) and placed 18th, while Carter was close to his PB and placed 16th overall. Hannah ran a PB in the senior 100mH and placed 13th overall. Although each athlete wanted to advance to the finals, the coaches were incredibly proud of their performances.

On Saturday, Carter took to the track to race in the 300mH. He ran a gutsy race which resulted in a PB. He would end up placing 13th overall. Although his goal was to qualify for the final, Carter was happy to finish his first OFSAA experience with a PB. Hannah competed in the afternoon in the senior girls 200m heats. Hannah also had set her sights to qualify for the finals. She ran a fantastic race, remembering the key points that would keep her relaxed, powerful and fast. Hannah was just shy of the PB that was set at the CISAA Championships. Even though she did not make the final, she should be proud of finishing her stellar high school athletic career, surrounded by her biggest cheerleaders, her family, friends and her coaches.

Thank you to Jovin ‘26 and Kiran Chaudhry ‘26 who got up early Saturday morning to cheer on their friend Carter as he ran the 300mH. They happened to be in Ottawa visiting family when they bumped into Carter and his father walking along the canal the night before. Their support definitely motivated Carter in his race.

Overall, the 2023 Track and Field season was a successful one, as every athlete ran, jumped or threw a PB at some point in the season. Three records were broken this season, one by Aidan Quast in the novice boys triple jump, a second by Hannah Clarke in the senior girls 200m and a third by Alex Estabrooks ‘24 in the senior girls 100m.

The coaches look forward to working with our keen, committed and talented team next year. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful season. We wish all of the graduating track and field athletes all the best in their future endeavours.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
