The Junior School Green Team was announced at Tuesday’s assembly this week. The Green Team will provide opportunities for our students to participate in sustainable initiatives, leadership opportunities, and make a difference.
Students from 5H fanned out in the Junior School on Thursday morning to visit each classroom. The students taught each of our classes about the importance of sorting waste into the correct bin. Each classroom was given a set of waste disposal guides to help them in their classrooms. The Green Team members will follow up with spot checks in two weeks on recesses to leave constructive feedback and track our progress toward this goal.
The Green Team will be assisting the Dining Hall staff in helping to monitor plate scraping at the two stations, to ensure our waste gets to the right places. We encourage you to think about your waste at home. How do you sort it? How much do you have? Is there room for improvement?
This year, students will be creating more of their own initiatives that follow their passions to create meaningful change during their Outdoor Education classes.
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
Founded in 1972, The Country Day School is a co-educational private school offering programs in JK-12 and located on 100 acres north of Toronto in King.
