CDS Synchronized Skater Retires After Successful Run

CDS Grade 12 student Anna Cappuccitti is a member of Canada’s Senior National Synchronized skating team, Nexxice, which trains out of Burlington, Ont.

At the early age of three Anna began skating in Bolton, Ontario. Her three older brothers played rep hockey and this drove her to get on the ice and be just like them. She instantly fell in love with skating, however, decided to take a different route into the sport of figure skating.

At nine-years-old, she decided to pursue the sport competitively and started training at the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie. This entailed waking up at 4:30 am and traveling north for an hour in order to be on the ice for 6:30 am to train every day before school.

Eventually, as she grew older, she developed a love for ice dancing and its graceful and elegant elements of the performance. Synchronized skating was a natural transition from ice dancing and at 14, Anna auditioned for Nexxice and earned a spot on the Senior National team. She was the youngest member of this world class team consisting of elite athletes, ranging up to the age of 26, from across Canada including three international skaters.

On average, Anna trains over 20 hours per week on and off the ice, including dance, yoga and strength and conditioning along with nutritional education and mental preparation.

In addition to competing locally and internationally, Anna, with Nexxice, became the 2014 Canadian Champions at Nationals held in Burnaby, B.C. and the 2014 World Silver Medalists as Team Canada 1 at the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships held in Courmayeur, Italy on April 4-5, 2014.

This season, despite the challenges of training and competing with a high ankle sprain, Anna, as a member of Nexxice representing Canada made skating history on December 11-12, 2015 by competing and earning a Bronze medal at the ISU Senior Gran Prix of Figure Skating Final in Barcelona, Spain where synchronized skating made its debut.

In addition to the Provincial championship and earning the 2016 National Silver medal, Anna had the honor of representing Canada with Nexxice at the inaugural Shanghai Trophy in Shanghai, China on March 4-6, 2016 and the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships in Budapest, Hungary on April 8-9, 2016.

Due to hard work, determination and dedication, Anna has had a successful run at her sport - 2014 World Silver Medalist, 2014 Canadian Champion, 2015 and 2016 Canadian Silver Medalist, 4-time Provincial Champion, 2015 ISU Senior Gran Prix of Figure Skating Final Bronze Medalist.

As a member of the High-Performance Phys-Ed program at CDS, Anna has had the support of her counsellors, teachers and the customized coursework and extra spare the School offers.  This coming fall, Anna has accepted her offer and will be attending Western University to study Social Sciences.
