Breakout EDU: Immersive Learning Games

The Breakout EDU immersive learning games platform was introduced to the CDS faculty this past June at our custom Google Apps for Education professional development summit. It consists of a combination of physical and digital puzzle elements that must be solved in a race against the clock. Players are challenged to open the locked Breakout EDU box using their powers of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.

Using Digital Citizenship as our theme, the students in Grades 5 and 6 all had the opportunity to experience a Breakout! session. Students assembled in the Junior School iLab where they worked together in teams, and using the clues and their knowledge of Digital Citizenship, to solve the puzzles that revealed the combinations to the locks and then attempted to remove them from the Breakout EDU box before the 45 minute timer ran out. Although it was, at times, excitingly down to the final few seconds, each group successfully broke ‘in’ to the Breakout box!

The debrief that followed was an informative and valuable summation of the classroom experience. With a little sugar in their tummies, students were asked to think about the game and share what they learned, how they worked as a team, what worked best and what didn’t, and what they might do differently next time. This innovative activity is strategically well-aligned with our learning-driven use of technology that is indicative of the school’s philosophical approach to technology in the classroom - plus it was a whole lot of fun for students and teachers alike!
