Senior School Eco Council

Story by Dima Kalander ’19
A few months ago, Mme Colucci approached some CDS students in the hopes of starting the Senior School Eco Council again, and of course I jumped at the chance!

One of our main jobs as members of this rejuvenated club is to fill the Rocket Composter everyday at lunch. The Rocket is a machine located behind the Senior School that creates mulch out of food compost that we gather from the compost bins in the Niczowski, Temovsky, Arrigo Dining Hall. The School purchased the Rocket in advance of the Dining Hall’s grand opening in September 2015. Prior to this, the problem of excess compost had never been an issue for the School, but we knew there would be compost coming and this is a great way to put it to use.
First, came an in depth training session. All you have to do is add one bin of compost, and one bin of wood chips, and voila – you have two bins of mulch! Who knew it could be this easy? Following the training session, we were assigned a partner or two to feed the Rocket with on a certain day of the week during our lunch hour.
I personally love this opportunity because it is just another simple thing that I can do to help the environment!
Even though it seems as if we are recycling a large amount, we are actually only composting a third of the waste here at CDS. We are trying to find an innovative way to both decrease waste produced by students and the kitchen, and increase the compost capacity, in the hopes of one day composting 100% of the food waste.
