Those of you who were on campus for Back-to-School shopping this week may have wondered what the film crew and trailers parked in and around Hawksworth Field were all about. Back in June, marblemedia, approached CDS about renting Centre Turf for the season opener of an 11-episode non-elimination sports competition reality TV series, All-Round Champion.
Originally created in Norway, where it won an International Emmy Kids Award, the Canadian adaptation would be filming throughout the summer in southern Ontario and feature 10 teenage pro-athletes (12-15 years old) from across North America competing in the ultimate competition in sports, including wakeboarding, gymnastics and skateboarding … everything but the sport they excel in. In the final episode, one athlete would be crowned All-Round Champion.
As a rule, CDS doesn’t rent out its facilities very often, but this concept caught our interest and aligned with one of our guiding principles – Fitness for Life. Long story short, the crew and athletes enjoyed our facilities so much they asked to come back this week to film the season finale that featured a Track and Field competition hosted by two-time Olympian and World Champion hurdler, Perdita Felicien. CDS was the only venue they returned to twice.
According to Matt Hornburg of marblemedia, “This family series is not about sports as much as it is about passion, grit and character. We’ve assembled the absolute highest calibre of young athletes in North America from a range of sports and paired them with the world’s top professional athletes. We are setting out to both inspire and challenge them to not only be the best at each new sport, but also be the best toward each other.”
With CDS as their backdrop, marblemedia even found a way to tap into our local talent by inviting our Track Coach and Health and Phys-Ed teacher, Ms. Denise Steadman, and an accomplished hurdler on the CDS track team, Lauren Neil ’22, to judge in the season’s final competition.
All-Round Champion will air in early 2020 on TVO and Knowledge Network in Canada, and BYUtv in the U.S. For more information about the show, please contact Robert Laughlin, Director of Marketing & Communications for marblemedia at firstname.lastname@example.org.
