A Huge Loss

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of a dear and long-time faculty member, Ms. Steph Collins. Steph passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon, surrounded by her family, after a short, yet courageous battle with cancer.

Ms. Collins has been a member of the Junior School faculty since 2003 and has been the face of the Outdoor Ed program there, and more recently in the Middle School since its inception in 2011. One cannot gaze out onto our sprawling back property without imagining Steph leading her little ones on an exciting new adventure exploring the world around them.

A natural teacher, Ms. Collins was a firm believer that children learn best by doing, so she provided her students with hands-on, captivating learning experiences that would ultimately encourage them to become lifelong learners.

CDS flags are flying at half staff today in Steph’s honour. Further details and arrangements will be shared with the community once we learn of them. For now, our thoughts and prayers are with Steph’s family and loved ones.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
