Leadership Trip to Camp Timberlane

Ryan Penko ’21 & Alex Kim ’22
A few weeks ago, we participated in the leadership opportunity at Camp Timberlane with the Grade 9s. This trip was a great chance to step out of our comfort zones, meet new people, and improve our leadership skills. The program offers the opportunity to connect with other students outside of your grade and that was our main focus throughout the trip. For me (Alex), as a new student, the program made me feel a lot more involved with the CDS community.
After the trip had finished we were confident that we had built a strong relationship with most of the students on the trip. We also enhanced our leadership capabilities with many opportunities to speak in front of large groups of people. We were able to guide and assist with organized activities, which was also a lot of fun. Overall, the program offers the opportunity to practice communication skills and a chance to be in nature.

This trip taught us what it really means to be a leader. Whether you enjoy nature, like meeting new people, or just want to go outside of your comfort zone, the program has something to offer for everyone and we hope other Grade 10 or 11 students will take the opportunity to choose this trip for breakout week next year, as it is a great experience!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
