Grade 11 English Students Chat with NYC Author

Victor LaValle, author of two texts read by Grade 11 English students (The Ballad of Black Tom and Destroyer), held a Google Hangout from the comforts of his home in NYC with students to discuss his work this week.
Using Lovecraftian horror to explore issues of racism and discrimination, LaValle’s texts provided many rich topics for discussion. Students asked questions about using the Gothic genre to bring the hidden, ugly parts of our society to light, about the role of the blues in African-American culture and history, and about LaValle’s own experiences growing up in New York.

LaValle is also the author of the short story collection Slapboxing with Jesus, four novels, The EcstaticBig MachineThe Devil in Silver, and The Changeling, and the creator and writer of a comic book.

We hope to see Mr. LaValle again soon!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
