Technology on Full Display at Spring Coffee House

Congratulations to all of our student performers who put forth a fantastic show for last week’s spring Coffee House. More than 20 students submitted video performances, including piano solos, duets, a modern dance number, a surreal MTV-style video, and some fabulous artwork with musical accompaniment. As well, quite a few successfully dazzled the audience with their newfound video/sound editing and mixing skills!
In Grade 9 Vocal Music this year, students have been working with the Soundtrap application, a digital audio workstation that allows them to work together to create performances even when we are apart.

Sofya Fefelova and Derya Karakul spent hours working on an arrangement of Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and took the idea of performing a duet to a whole new level!

Chloe McKay '21 did something similar by mixing six Grade 9 Vocal students' individual pieces into one as a class project for her Grade 12 Comm Tech course. The six students submitted their performances and entrusted Chloe to mix the sound and edit the video into one phenomenal choir. Chloe used Adobe Audition to mix the audio together before using Premiere Pro to edit the video in afterwards.  Be sure to watch the video to watch Chloe explain the process herself!

It was bittersweet to see so many GYs come out and perform for their last (and for some, first) Coffee House. Denny Hu gave a heartfelt introduction and shoutout to his classmates before singing John Denver's Country Roads with classmates and friends Alex BobechkoRyan Corbeil and Liam Bray. And our two MC's for the evening, Sarah Sutherland-Pace and Zaina Halle, did an outstanding job.

Well done everyone! You can still enjoy their performances here.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
