SS Mock Trial Team Wins the Judges' Cup

Last week, the CDS Mock Trial team competed in the Judges' Cup Tournament virtually. They took part in two trials, one as the prosecution and one as the defense, and finished among the top four teams, advancing to the finals held this past Monday evening in-person at the Newmarket Courthouse.
The final trials took place in front of panels of actual judges. CDS faced last year’s champion, Sacred Heart H.S., taking on the role of Crown prosecutors. In the second trial of the evening, CDS faced Tommy Douglas H.S. (Woodbridge) to determine First Place. It was a close-fought legal battle with numerous good legal points made on both sides’ lawyers, and remarkable witness performances.

The CDS team finished as this year’s Mock Trial Champions. In the words of Mr. Downer, Faculty Advisor and Coach, “Our veterans were amazing and our rookies shone Monday night.” Congratulations to Tarini Amarasinghe ‘22, Nilou Doust ‘22, Eliza Pasha ‘22, Jessen Patel ‘24, Monika Nascimento ‘25, Jessie Rudin ‘23, Olivia Budweth ‘25, and Kian Doust ‘24, and their faculty advisors Mr. Downer and Mme Davidson! The team is additionally grateful for the valuable advice and assistance provided by Christine Budweth-Mingay, a retired lawyer and aunt of Olivia Budweth.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
