Waterloo Beaver Computing Challenge

Krista Edwards
Last month, 58 Grade 7 and 8 students competed in the annual University of Waterloo Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) here at CDS in their math classes.
This challenging contest aims to introduce computer science concepts to students who have little or no previous experience with computing. The BCC is a paperless, on-line problem solving contest with focus on computational skills and logical thinking. Questions are inspired by real-world topics in computer science and mathematics.

A special thank you goes out to Carolyn Du ‘24Kevin Yang ‘24 and Tiffany Chan ‘25 who organized and ran a BCC preparation session over Google Meet on the Tuesday evening before the contest. The strategy suggestions that they presented were extremely valuable.

This year, there were 12,897 overall participants worldwide. The worldwide average was 64.55 out of 90.

Certificates of Distinction are awarded to students who achieved in the top 25% of students who participated at CDS. Students who are receiving certificates achieved 84 (or higher) out of 90, and all of our certificate winners are included on the Beaver Computing Challenge Honour Roll, which is obtained for scores of 83 or higher amongst all participants worldwide.

This year, Certificates of Distinction were earned by the following students:
  • With a score of 84: Marvin Liu (Grade 8).
  • With a score of 86: Charlize Bianchi (Grade 7), Michael Chen (Grade 7), Max
Hu (Grade 7), Arya Kapila (Grade 7), Chauncey Li (Grade 7), and Sophie
    Yuan (Grade 8).
  • With a score of 88: Darren Li (Grade 8).
  • Seven students with a perfect score of 90: Lily Gottdenker (Grade 7), Santtu Koskinen (Grade 7), Mina Matsui (Grade 7), Lucas Rites (Grade 7), Kevin Zhai (Grade 8), Ginia Zhang (Grade 8), and Mia Zhu (Grade 8).
Over the past 10 years, CDS has only seen three perfect scores in total (in 2020 there was one, and in 2021 there were two)!

Congratulations to all who participated! If you would like to know your score and it was not reported in the above results, please speak to your math teacher.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
