Middle School Drama Improvisation

By Gisa Bevacqua-Tirone
Mat Mailandt of Think Fast Comedy was back on campus again as a guest artist in all of our Grade 8-12 drama classes over the past few weeks helping to teach the improv unit.  Mat's expertise had the students learning the skills of "yes, and", quick thinking and effective collaboration.
The younger grades were introduced to new improv concepts, while the older grades scaffolded their skills, culminating in long-form improv. Most importantly, the students learned to "fail" with grace and to accept and add on to their own and others' ideas.

Improv helps young actors to stay present and in the moment, as well as to begin to trust their own instincts on stage. The students also discussed how improv skills are applicable and useful in their daily lives. They thoroughly enjoyed their time with Mat and always look forward to this unit.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
