CDS Captured Three CISAA Championships Last Weekend

The Country Day School overcame inclement weather and fierce competition last weekend to capture three CISAA soccer championships for U12 Boys’ Division 2 and Co-Ed U10 Divisions 2 & 3.
“Our teams worked hard this season and played their hearts out,” said CDS Director of Athletics John Andersen. “We’re still waiting on results for our U12 Girls’ Soccer team, as they qualified first in their pool in overall points and placed third going into the final four. But because of the weather, they weren’t able to finish playing all of the games this weekend due to field closures.”

The U12 Boys’ Soccer team played their tournament at Pickering College last Saturday. Their first game was against Crestwood Prep and ended in a 2-2 draw. The Cyclones came out victorious as a result of penalty kicks. They advanced to the semi-finals and avenged an earlier defeat at the hands of Holy Trinity School with a 2-0 win. In the finals, CDS faced the number one seed - Montcrest School.

According to Coach Mark Burleigh, “the second half of the championship game was one of the finest displays of grit, teamwork and commitment that I’ve seen in CDS athletes.” As a result, CDS scored the game winner with four minutes remaining in regulation time and earned their second championship in four years at the U12 D2 level. Final score CDS 2 – MS 1.

Also braving the elements, both CDS’ Co-Ed U10 D2 and D3 Soccer teams competed in tournaments in Toronto this weekend. Coach Craig Johnson’s Co-Ed U10 team played a tournament at Upper Canada College Saturday and won all three games qualifying them as the CISAA D2 champions. This is the first time in school history that CDS has won this title. Game scores were as follows:
Game 1: CDS 3 - CS 1
Game 2: CDS 4 – CPC 0
Game 3: CDS 3 – UCC 0

Meanwhile, Coach Jen Vipond’s Co-Ed U10 team played in the CISAA D3 tournament at Sterling Hall and also won their tournament. As the tournament was a round-robin format, co-champions were named between CDS and Crescent School who both finished with 3-1 records. Game scores were as follows:
Game 1: CDS 4 – SH 2
Game 2: CDS 6 – BVG 0
Game 3: CDS 1 – UCC 0
Game 4: CS 1 – CDS 0

According to Coach Vipond, this is the first time CDS has ever won the U10 CISAA D3 tournament and only the third time a co-ed school has earned the title – quite an accomplishment considering most of the teams are all boys. “The team battled through absolutely horrific weather conditions to win three out of four games,” said Vipond. “I was incredibly proud of them!”

Two of CDS Senior Girls’ teams also finished first place in league play on Friday. The Senior Girls’ Soccer team played St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School from Oakville on Centre Field and secured first place in league play with a score of 6-1 with goals by Sjörland Gibson (1), Meredith Langston (1), and Rachel Glynn (4). And the Senior Girls’ Basketball team won first place in league play with a win against Lakefield College School of Lakefield, 56-53. High scorers were Cara Tiemens (23 points) and Shay Allen (16 points).

Special thanks to all of the CDS Parents who turned out to cheer their children on in spite of the weather. The entire CDS community really appreciated your enthusiasm and spirit!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
