Lauren Michelberger, Grade 9

Lauren Michelberger, a Grade 9 CDS student from Aurora, is an accomplished gymnast and dancer.
She competes at a very high level in both disciplines and is part of the High Performance Phys-Ed Program at the School. Both sports complement each other very well, making Lauren a much-decorated athlete.

She has been competing at the provincial level gymnastics since she was nine years old. On April 4th, she competed against other gymnasts from all over Ontario at the Ontario Gymnastic Championships held in Windsor. Of the 32 gymnasts, she placed 5th overall, 2nd in floor, 3rd in beam, 8th in bars, and 14th in vault. As a member of the Kids Super Gym in Aurora, Lauren spends 16 hours of her week training alongside six other girls. She also coaches younger gymnasts. “I like coaching a lot. I’m very close with the kids because I know how they feel since I went through it.”

Her coach Wendy Gillies speaks highly of Lauren. “It’s an absolute pleasure to watch Lauren compete as she exhibits true passion when she performs. She has all the qualities of a true champion. Her gymnastics ability, blended with her smile and personal flair, make her a very tough opponent.”

Her segue into gymnastics came through another sport, dance. Her parents introduced her to dance at three years of age, and from there she started to specialize in Jazz and Acro (dance with acrobatics). She dances out of the JayMor School of Dancing and most recently competed at the Strive Dance Festival in Oakville, where she finished 1st in Acro Solo, Open Solo, Acro Duet, Acro Group, and Jazz Group.

Lauren is enrolled in the High Performance Phys-Ed Program at CDS. The program offers Lauren another spare to help balance out her education and sport, “As soon as I get home, I have to get changed and leave [for the gym]. I don’t get home until 9:00 or 10:00 every night, so the extra spare allows me to do my homework, without worrying about it during my training.”

Although, both sports have played a big part of her life, Lauren plans to focus more on gymnastics than dance in the future. “I’m not sure if I’m going to quit or just lay back more.” She hopes this prioritization will help her achieve her future goals of competing at the university level.
