Grade 6 Debaters Get Expert Coaching

Shannon Street
The Grade 6s are excitedly getting ready for their annual speech competition and what better way to prepare than to get input from the best of the best.
Last Thursday, 6S was lucky enough to welcome longtime Senior School Debating Coach, Ms. Wyndham-West, and Sarah Croxon ‘24, just back from the World Championships in South Africa, to help them review the content of their speeches, offer advice on how to present effectively, and tips for committing their ideas to memory.

Raquel DiPede said that the advice to change the pitch and tempo of her speech was really helpful. Charlie Davis learned about the importance of pausing as it can really emphasize a certain part.

Listening to Ms. Wyndham-West and hearing from Sarah about how public speaking and debating has become a passion that has opened doors and created unique and exciting opportunities has inspired a number of the Grade 6s to think about making debate and public speaking part of their journey at CDS.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
