A Campfire Tradition Comes to Life in Grade 4

By Ms. Donais

Last week, our Grade 4 students took part in a tradition that has been shared across communities for more than 400,000 years: gathering around the campfire. In music class, students learned traditional campfire songs and how to play them on the ukulele. Each student had the opportunity to lead the group in song as we sang together and enjoyed one another’s company.
We also made hot chocolate over the fire and roasted marshmallows—a true campfire experience! The weather cooperated beautifully, allowing us to enjoy three wonderful campfires throughout the week.

This special event was a meaningful collaboration between the Outdoor Education program (Mr. Bartle) and the Music program (Ms. Donais), and we hope it will grow into a lasting Grade 4 tradition.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
