Learning Profiles: a key to supporting, knowing and inspiring our students

As many of you know, one of our strategic outcomes is to support, know and inspire all our students. In some respects, the second of these verbs, to know, is an important precondition to achieving the other two. The reasoning is quite simple: if we know our students—their learning preferences, the areas of study that engage them and those at which they struggle, their learning strengths and weaknesses, and what they are truly passionate about—we are much more likely to find ways to inspire them and to provide the necessary support that will enable them to thrive at CDS and beyond.

To this end, CDS has begun the process of creating a Learning Profile for each of our students that will travel with them and develop as they progress through their life at CDS. For our Middle and Senior School students, the first step of the process was the completion, in late October, of a survey, The CDS Selfie, which touched on a variety of topics including learning styles and preferences, learning weaknesses/strengths, enrichment, hobbies and pursuits outside of school, and wellness. It is our hope that the Selfie will help advisors and teachers deepen their understanding of their students.

“It’s about deeply knowing your child, such that we can support them to the best of our abilities,” explains Head of School John Liggett. “The CDS Selfie is a self-reflective exercise we had our students complete and just one piece of the building block to what will become their Learning Profile.”

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
