Our Milk Bag Experience

Lili Gray, Annabelle Clouthier, Katie Dowling - Grade 5 students of 5M
Over the past four months, the students of CDS have been collecting used milk bags in the Senior School Office, an effort started by Grade 12 student Julia Garbe. We started doing this because otherwise they would end up in a landfill and would never decompose.

On May 5, Miss K from Milk Bags Unlimited, came to the Grade 5 classrooms. She came to teach us to weave the milk bags into mats using a loom. These mats will be sent to people in need of somewhere to sleep. Some of the places the mats are sent to are the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Honduras. These are just some of the countries that she has visited and helped. Miss K told us that she doesn’t only send mats to people in need but she also sends food, fabric (for making clothes) and used milk bags so the people could carry their food from one place to another.

Miss K taught us how to cut the milk bags, loop the milk bags, and then weave the milk bags together. We noticed that it was quite satisfying to go over and under and over and under also it helped saying “OVER UNDER OVER UNDER.”

We realized that we were making a big difference in the world while we were weaving. At CDS we are going to build a loom so that all of CDS can make a difference and have fun while doing it!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
