Washington, DC Breakout Week Trip

Ava Morson & Nusha Naziri, Gr. 10
Bright and early on Sunday, October 1, CDS students from Grades 10 and 11 jumped on the bus headed for Washington, DC.
The next day, our first morning in DC was spent at Mt. Vernon where we visited the famous mansion that was the beloved home of George and Martha Washington up until General Washington’s death in 1759. Afterwards we were given the time to explore Old Town Alexandria to eat lunch, do a bit of shopping and take in the beautiful scenery. Later that day, we visited the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia where we walked amongst the thousands of small white headstones honouring fallen American soldiers from all of the wars, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the tomb of President John F. Kennedy.

Over the next few days, we managed to see amazing landmarks such as the Washington Monument, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, The Martin Luther King Memorial, the World War 2 Memorial, the Iwo Jima statue, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and many other landmarks and moving memorials found on the National Mall during a guided night tour.

We spent many hours at the Smithsonian Institute, the world’s largest museum complex where we were given a guided tour of the National Art Gallery and were given lots of time to explore the many museums, such as the Natural History Museum and the Air and Space Museum. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum was a moving experience which we will never forget.

In addition to all of the sites and tours, we took in two evening theatrical performances: “Stones in his Pockets” and “Shear Madness”. Needless to say, it was a trip that was jam-packed with a great combination of history, art, science, politics and fun!

Thanks to our awesome teacher chaperones, Mr. Downer, Mr. Young, Mrs. Aldoroty and Ms. Jeffery for making it such a great experience for us.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
