An Unexpected Addition to CDS BBall

Trying out for a team can be intimidating for some at a new school. Grade 10 student David Kuntz, who recently moved to Aurora from Lausanne, Switzerland, initially had some reservations about trying out for the Senior Boys’ Basketball team. However, those reservations were quickly overcome and he has embraced the opportunity to become more involved. And in turn, his team has welcomed him with open arms.

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, David has been playing basketball with his friends since he can remember. His family has moved quite a bit over the years, but sports has been a constant, and he has played basketball, soccer and hockey on organized teams before moving to Switzerland three years ago. As a student at the International School of Lausanne, he played for the school teams starting with hockey as his main sport, then moving to soccer, and finally to basketball.

“I’ve always enjoyed watching and keeping up with basketball,” explains David. “Ever since I was really young, I remember my dad having a ball in his hand. I guess that’s why I always liked playing multiple sports, but more recently I’ve switched to basketball.”

According to his coach, Pete Milonas, David has enjoyed a great deal of success in his first go-around with CDS athletics. He joins a team that had its share of struggles last year, going the entire season without a win. This season has seen drastic change and David has been instrumental in the team jumping out to a promising 3-1 record. As point guard, he played exceptionally well in the team's first game, his CDS athletic debut, scoring 30 points and leading the team to a victory.

“It is rare that a kid comes in and makes that kind of impact without disrupting the team chemistry,” comments Coach Milonas. “David has made that difficult balancing act seem easy. He has quickly become one of the “guys,” and yet drawn on his basketball experience to become a go-to player.”

Additionally, David’s time in Switzerland has made him an expert in the CISAA’s recent implementation of FIBA (International Basketball Federation) rules played internationally, but only this year in Ontario, which has been a big help to Coach Milonas and his teammates.

Overall, it’s a win-win for CDS and Coach Milonas remains optimistic about the rest of the season.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
