A Taste of Montreal

Hannah Fransen
One of our Breakout Week options for Grade 10 and 11 students was an exploration of cuisine and culture on the Taste of Montreal trip. After an uneventful bus ride, we stopped at Verger Lacroix, where students picked apples and made apple maple butter, which hopefully made it home for parents to taste! After a steak dinner at the Vieux Port steakhouse and a guided tour of Vieux Montreal, students settled into our cozy hotel.
The next day, we toured McGill as part of a McCord Museum interactive session. Students compared the present day buildings and streets with their historical counterparts on the tour and in a hands-on activity. After some free time in underground Montreal to shop and explore, we embarked on a scenic boat cruise. We finished off the day by enjoying crepes and chocolat chaud before heading off to solve the maze at SOS Labyrinthe.

On day 3, we returned to McGill to complete a video scavenger hunt while touring the campus. Our next stop was a very popular one! We visited St-Viateur Bagel, where students witnessed how the famous Montreal bagel is created and enjoyed at least one themselves. With snacks in our bellies, we ventured into our very first cooking class at La Guilde Culinaire. Students learned how to make fresh pasta, pasta sauce, and a chocolate lava cake from scratch. Following the instructions of our head chef, we had fun kneading, pressing, and mixing. The students particularly enjoyed plating their beautiful meals. We ended the day off with full bellies at the top of Mont Royal, where the students took copious selfies and group pictures.

On our last day, with most of the students suited up in their new McGill clothes, we visited the Notre-Dame Basilica and Pointe-à-Callière archaeological museum which is built over and around the historic ruins of some of the first buildings in Montreal. Before getting back on the bus to return home, we stopped at La Sucrèrie de la Montagne, a sugar shack, where we stuffed ourselves with pancakes, eggs, potatoes, beans, sausages, and ham, all smothered in maple syrup collected and produced on site. In the spirit of the Québécois, we played spoons and danced along with the live entertainment.

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
