Remarks from a Visual Arts Student

Colleen Glynn ’19 was one of three visual artists who presented at a recent Arts Assembly. Colleen shared her evolving passion for art and some examples of her most recent landscape work.

Art has become something that has grown increasingly important to me over my years at CDS. I never expected it to become such a huge part of my life, but through the guidance of my teachers, it has. People now look at my paintings and say things like, “Wow, I could never do that,” which is amazing because I really didn’t think my art was decent until this past year.
Bob Ross, an artist who I admire once said, “I started painting as a hobby when I was little. I didn't know I had any talent. I believe talent is just a pursued interest. Anybody can do what I do.” I very much agree that art is something that takes time and practice to achieve real results.

For my art concentration this year, I decided to explore painting realistically in acrylic paint. My subject matter is landscapes and barn structures that are quite common to King, but with an added pop of colour. All of the paintings I have done are of local places in attempt to show how beautiful Canada is.

I originally painted lines on the buildings just using one colour and then black lines, but I evolved into using more shades to achieve more realistic images. This project has also helped me better understand colour mixing and what colours go into things like simply painting white snow.

This project is what caused me to want to pursue Fine Arts in my post-secondary studies and it has helped me find a love for patience and detail. Had I not taken AP Studio Art, I may have never discovered what I'm capable of and how much I enjoy painting.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
