CDS Bee & Apiary Update
As you may recall, last year’s bee initiative, tended by members of the Sustainability Council, yielded 48 jars of liquid gold and was packaged with our own CDS Honey Project label designed by the Grade 12 Comm Tech class. It was so exciting for our first year’s effort!
This year, our intrepid Bee Team has installed four new nucs (nuclear colonies each with its own queen). We settled them into their new homes over the weekend. Social distancing and mask-wearing were mandatory, but as you can see in these photos - not for the bees! There were 10,000 in each box, all busy doing what they do.

As Mr. MacMillan and Mme Colucci are retiring this year, they have passed the torch onto next year’s eager team of Mr. Bartle, Mrs. Huckvale, Mrs. Leacock and Ms. Wellnhofer who will be ready to work with students from all levels interested in the art of beekeeping.
We have been fortunate to have the guidance of CDS parent Ian Millar and the keen assistance of former parent Amanda Flavell. Hopefully they, along with Mac and Colooch, will continue to support the CDS Apiary mission as consultants in the years ahead.
Having our own apiary is such an enriching experience. Learning how the hives function, harvesting the delicious honey, and helping support the vital process of pollination as an integral part of the biodiversity on the CDS campus provides such a tremendous learning experience for our students. Be sure to visit the CDS Bee & Bee once our campus is up and running again!!
Land Acknowledgment
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
