CDS Snowboard Team Finds Success on the Slopes Once Again

Jen Weening, Snowboarding Coach
Building a strong team culture goes beyond just having a winning record. This is something that The Country Day School’s Snowboard team has been focused on since its inception in 2014. As we reassembled the team in the fall of 2021, after a year’s hiatus, there was some concern about whether the culture we had worked so hard to build over the years would be lost. The team had ended the 2020 season on an incredibly high note, with the boys’ team taking the OFSAA banner for the third time in four years and Grade 12 student Jeevan Gosal taking the individual HS boys Gold medal. With several senior athletes having graduated, and thereby a missed opportunity to pass the leadership torch on, would they be able to resume where they left off, not just in terms of success, but in team culture, camaraderie and competitiveness?
It turns out that there was no need for concern. The team welcomed several brand new snowboarders for our December training day, and our returning athletes quickly showed them the “CDS Snowboard team way.” Despite a compressed season, the team represented strongly against their CISAA competition in the regular season. Heading into the championship event at Alpine Ski Club, the Boys’ team was tied for first place with St. Michael’s College School, and the Girls’ team was tied for first place with Greenwood College School.

In the end, the CDS girls were triumphant capturing the team Gold, and the boys took home the team Silver, edged out by just a single finishing position on the scoreboard. The individual finishes were equally impressive, with Sarin G. taking individual Gold in the U16 Girls GS event, and Alex L. finishing right behind her with Silver. Alex L. also won individual Gold in the U16 Girls’ slopestyle competition, and Tyler B. took Silver in the U20 Boys GS event.

All of our athletes celebrated strong personal accomplishments, and our new snowboarders demonstrated incredible improvement from the start of the season, all of which indicates that the future of the CDS Snowboard team remains promising. Although OFSAA was cancelled this year, we look forward to 2023 when we will hopefully bring home that banner once again!
