Once Again, Music Camp Did Not Disappoint

For four days in September, the Music faculty, along with some enthusiastic music students, headed off for a weekend of playing, singing, creating, along with many other fun activities.

The singers were honoured to work with Baritone Nicholas Higgs. Hailing from Nova Scotia, Mr. Higgs recently graduated with a Masters Degree in Opera Performance from the University of Toronto. The choir worked on repertoire and technique during their rehearsals, while the vocal clinics provided an amazing opportunity for singers to be coached individually on their solo repertoire.

Meanwhile, the band students had the opportunity to work with their clinicians to help hone their skills on their instruments and work on key aspects of musicianship to refine their technical abilities. Their days began with clinics in the morning with their primary instruments, followed by a full jazz and concert band rehearsal before and after lunch, respectively.

Being away at Camp Glen Bernard also provided an amazing backdrop for our students to come together as musicians in a variety of ways outside their rehearsal spaces. The highlight of this was our time spent on the camps ‘Jungle Course’. With incredible courage, our campers climbed and maneuvered their way through a challenging course. Throughout the experience we all witnessed so many moments of support, encouragement and cheerleading from those on the ground or those alongside our climbers in the trees. Both in these moments and in our rehearsals, camp provided students with a brilliant opportunity to learn about each other and to truly discover how much we can achieve when we work together.

Thank you to former faculty members, Mr. Nugent and Mr. Garbe, for joining the Music Camp this year. It was great having you join in the fun!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
