Scott Garbe

CDS Head of Drama & Middle School English Teacher
How do you continue learning in your life? What is your professional passion?
Learning is a glorious thing. As Socrates was fond of saying, “All I know is that I know nothing.” What is known pales in comparison to what is waiting to be discovered. How exciting is that? The only thing you have to do to continue learning is to live. Just swing your feet over the side of your bed in the morning, open your mind and get started. I am very lucky that my professional passions are also my personal passions – theatre, literature, history and story telling in all its many forms.

What is one of your most memorable teaching moments?
That’s a tough one! In collaboration with our directing team, student cast and crew members, bringing to life the stories of transformational young people like Chanie Wenjack, Matthew Shepard and Anne Frank has been an unforgettable experience and profound honour. In the theatre, life’s most memorable moments are shared and our most important mission, the creation of empathy, becomes a reality. As Anne once said, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment to improve the world.” And in the theatre, we have the opportunity to embody that truth over and over again, each and every time we walk upon the stage.

Favourite thing about working at CDS:
In most jobs, you will find yourself working with people similar to you. In teaching, surrounded by your colleagues and students, you have the opportunity to work with an incredibly diverse spectrum of personalities that constantly challenges your preconceptions, notions and limitations – never a dull moment. At CDS, the only thing that the members of this diverse group have in common is that they are unfailingly supportive of, and interested in, each other. And that is a rare and beautiful thing.

Something you’ve crossed off your Bucket List:
Sometimes things get crossed off your bucket list that you never knew were on it until you live it. Does that make sense? When we decided to produce The Laramie Project, the story of the tragic murder of Matthew Shepard, an event that transformed the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights, I didn’t expect to be touring around Matt’s beloved Wyoming with his incredible father, Dennis. Or that he and his wife Judy would come to CDS to share their experience with our school community during the run of the production. That was an experience I would have put on my bucket list if it had occurred to me that it was possible. Luckily, life insisted on being more magical than I could have imagined.

Outside of CDS I’m … Napping with my cats.

Hometown:
I was born in Ottumwa, Iowa (long story), but the town I feel most close to is the one where I spent my childhood summers – on my grandparent’s farm in my mom’s hometown of Fielding, Saskatchewan. If you look to see where the sky is most blue, and trace that spot down with your finger, that’s where the Lazy K Ranch is. Magical.
