Andrés Mejia

Senior School Math & Science Teacher
How do you continue to learn in life?
Staying curious is the key to being a lifelong learner. I'm exposed to new ideas from students and peers every day and I make a habit of keeping up with the news, especially when it's related to science. My intrinsic curiosity towards science and math keeps me on my toes and wanting to learn more about things that I hear about every day. I am most passionate about discussing and sharing information that I'm interested in with those around me - it just so happens that these passions usually involve math and science and that those around me are students!

What are your most memorable teaching moments?
My favourite types of interactions with students are those that occur when the root of the interaction is based on the student's curiosity. Whether the interaction is in science or math class, or during an extra-curricular event such as soccer or golf, when a student is passionately curious about the topic, natural, rich conversations come from it.

Favourite thing about working at CDS:
My favourite part about working at CDS is interacting with the incredible community that exists here. The students are at the centre of this community and everyone is so dedicated and passionate about the role that they play in it. Working in an atmosphere where learning from mistakes is encouraged fosters a constructive and forward-thinking philosophy where growth is the goal. Every member of the community contributes toward these ideals.

Something you’ve crossed off your Bucket List:
I have quite the bucket list...but I have managed to cross off visiting the base camp of Mount Everest and summiting a neighbouring mountain! It was completely worth the immense time and effort (and money), but these are experiences that we remember when we go through times like these when crossing off bucket list items is a bit tough.

Other than CDS, I support: I'm very passionate about supporting young leaders to revolutionize mental health, especially in youth populations. Specifically, Jack.org – a Canadian non-profit with wonderful initiatives that work with teachers and post-secondary students to increase education, improve attitudes, and to change systems surrounding mental health.

Hometown: Bogota, Colombia! My family moved to Canada when I was 3 years old.

Also Known As: My closest friends call me Dres, my family calls me Mecas (a nickname in Spanish that has no translation or meaning).

Joined CDS in: 2019

Education: B.Sc. in Physical Science (major) and Mathematics (minor) from the University of Guelph and B.Ed. from Ontario Tech University. In the future, I would love to earn an additional qualification in guidance and to learn more about youth mental health.
